Chapter 4 – Never trust a pirate
"You and I are going to clean those nasty cuts of yours. We don’t want them to get infected, now do we?" He cooed with an amused smile playing around his pouting lips, as if speaking to a five year old. For some reason that made it all the more threatening, as if he'd already bonded with me, as if bonded with a pet.
Holding his head high as he looked down his perfect straight nose which slightly turned up, to look at me and check out the bloody cuts on my face and arms.
He studied me for a moment, not speaking, hardly blinking, as he squeezed his darkened eyelids closer against the burning sun. Hiding the green diamond-like sparkling eyes behind them. He was obviously lost in thought as he suddenly dropped his burned cigarette butt carelessly from his lips to the floor, close to my perfect shoes. Shoes I would soon loose, I knew.
I looked away from the intensity of his powerful gaze and the fear it brought me. His fingers now tracing the deep cut on my cheek gently. So carefully it didn't hurt me, but made me gasp in fear. I was so lost, and he was so in control.
"Follow me."
I don’t know why he asked this, as he dragged me along with him by my hand the moment he said the words, taking me with him and walking into the cabin that led to stairs. Stairs leading to below the deck. I know he was taking me to his cabin, and I feared what he would do to me once we arrived.
The way he'd looked at me….
I only had a brief chance to take in the old, dark and beautiful ship as we walked past several separated rooms and places for storage.
"Below is where the crew sleeps Bam. If you don’t behave yourself I might force you to spend your nights there. "
Captain Ville laughed, running his thumb over the back of my hand teasingly. I had the sudden feeling all my nerves ended right there in my hand. That was how much my body became aware of it.
"Even though I hear they have extremely cosy nights together."
Laughter appeared from the doorway we passed, and I jumped when I once again came eye to eye with Migé, the pirate responsible for my capture.
"Aye captain, that's what I hear too. Better keep an eye on Jyrki and Jussi eey?"
"Aye, tell Gas I’ll be on deck in a moment to discuss the course."
We walked on, as the captain now walked behind me, placing his one free hand on my shoulder and leading me to the hallway.
"That was my right hand, Migé, you’ve met him." He informed me kindly, and of course it was nothing I did not know already. My head still throbbed from the smack he had corrected me with.
" That was the kitchen we just passed. Migé is the one making our delicious dinner every evening, and we appreciate that very much. So will you."
That last comment was a warning, I understood. I would not be allowed to request my meals as I was used to at home. I would have to settle for what appeared on the table. Here, I was no son of the governor. Here I was only Bam.
"I assume our dinner will contain what was supposed to be eaten on your ship tonight."
Why did he laugh? Why was he so cruel?
"His room is next to Jack o' Cups Gas, right next to kitchen. I’m sure that won’t surprise you." He spoke, obviously referring the belly both men sported.
"Storage is on the end of the hallway, next to my room. We keep our rum, tobacco and gunpowder in those closets. Of course you're noy allowed in without permission."
I simply listened as he explained some rules to me, still leading me through the dark corridor.
"Oh and Bam, one more thing."
He spoke to me, leaning closer into me from behind.
"Never trust a pirate."
‘Oh dear god.’ Why did he have to scare me so? Why did he made me feel like I was going to spill all possible body fluencies at once.
It was than, we reached a beautiful dark hardwood door, leading to a room on the end of ship.
The captains room. His room.
There was no doubt.
**
He opened the door, and I noticed it wasn’t locked. There was no key. There was no lock.
That was somewhat of a relief, as much at was another threat. He could not lock me up. Nor could I hide behind a closed door.
The room was dark, larger than the one our captain had possessed and smelled of heavy tobacco. It was all I could tell as I stood in the doorway for a moment, his hand still in mine, pulling slightly.
"And welcome to the captain’s room. My room, better said. Come on, don’t be shy." He teasingly smiled, squeezing my little drenched, quivering hand gently with his larger one. The black cloth wrapped around it pressed against the inside as he pulled me with him over the threshold.
Once inside, The room became more clear to my vision. Especially when he lit the large, thick black candle on his corner of his desk. The dancing flame made the room more visible, but also cast terrifying shadows on the dark wooden walls and a mysterious gleam on the matching ceiling and floor.
There were not a lot of objects in the room, but everything a captains cabin needed. It was dark, expensive-looking and matching. Designed after good taste, as every rich man would certainly admit.
But there was no sign of any sort of gold, jewellery or any other form of treasure in sight which was highly unusual for the cabin of a pirate captain.
There was an enormous dark, wooden oak chest in the left corner, with a golden-framed mirror hanging on the wall next to it. Next to that, a single, empty chair.
On the floor was a round emerald rug. The colour deep and pure, and looked like it was made from some kind of expensive fur.
Next to the door, I noticed the dark-wooden desk and, as he pushed me in further, a matching chair that was the same as the single one next to the chest in front of it.
Above my head, a round chandelier made of wood, hung from the ceiling, moving from side to side with every wave, with seven black candles placed in it. The wax dried up on the sides told me it had been lit often, even though he made no move to light it now.
On the desk, a black, closed book, which cover did not betray what it contained, a jar of ink, and a quill with a big black feather upon it placed in a beautiful glass, with silver angel wings on the side.
Then the bed, with it’s headboard placed in the middle of the right wall. I heard myself gasp as I laid my eyes upon the outstanding piece of art. The high, dark bed with the silk black sheets and cushions, made from the most expensive materials, and with a size that would allow four full-grown men to sleep in it.
But apart from the necessary, beautiful furniture, there was no luxury to be found. No decoration, no treasures, no nothing.
So unlike a captains cabin, letting me know he wasn’t like the other captains. He was unpredictable, and that only frightened me more.
He pushed his hand against my back lightly, but with strength in his fingertips, leading me inside the room and closer to the bed. I tried to walk slowly, tripping slightly as I tried to push back, afraid of that huge, high and dark bed. His bed. A bed that undoubtedly could tell the most horrifying stories, if it would have been able to speak.
"Sit, Bammie." He commended me, like I was some sort of dog. Patronizing me, as he already had given me several inappropriate pet names. Obviously getting fed up with my resistance and now pushing me roughly on the bed.
Landing, face first, on the cool, black silk, as my hands cached my upper body and saved it from the blow his rough shove would have given it.
Only my legs were off of the bed, as my knees were now touching the rug on the floor, kneeling me in front of it as my cheek laid against the softness of the sheets.
I let out a little cry at the unexpected fall and I felt chills running through my quivering body as I realized the position I was currently in. So vulnerable with my back towards the captain, and my brown curls that embarrassed me so, hanging before my eyes and taking my vision.
A low chuckle came from the captain, as his slow footsteps walked towards me. Standing so close behind me I could almost feel his body heat against the back of my legs and buttocks. Standing behind my frightened, bruised and bent body.
I cringed as I felt his knees pushing against my hips as he took another step forward. Standing over me now as I tried to lay still, waiting for what was going to happen to me as his hand suddenly touched the top of my head lightly. Whipping the strands of hair gently out of my eyes and further back on my head, he explored the bumps on it gently with his fingertips before running his fingers through my curls and down to my neck. I could only cringe as I felt my cheeks burn and sudden streams of heat filling the pit of my belly. I could feel the warmth of my own breath against my skin as I panted into the soft pillow my cheek was laying against.
What was happening inside of me? The nearness of his body made me feel so incredibly weak. So weak I could cry. But I wouldn’t cry, I'd done that enough today.
When his hands suddenly stopped touching me instead of running further down my body, I wanted to look behind me, but I didn't dare. I could only wait, and wonder what was happening.
I only realized his true intentions when his hands slipped under my arms and legs, to gently roll me over to my back. Finally making me able to look up at him with widened eyes to see only a caring gleam in his green ones.
"Belay now Bam, I need to see how to take care of those cuts of yours. I won’t have ye dyin’ on me over a stupid infection ey."
As he pulled me up in a sitting position, speaking to me and calming me down, I realized he truly did bring me here to take care of my injuries. I wondered what made him care. A soulless, evil creature like himself.
I wrapped my arms around myself protectively, still shaken from his touch, and the fear of his intentions while watching him walk towards the chest in the corner and open it. Almost instantly he returned with a big piece of black cloth and a bottle. The things he had been looking for.
"Take off your clothes."
His deep voice gave me such a horrific command I shrieked. Wrapping my arms even closer around myself as I tried to back away. Only for him to laugh in amusement, popping the cork off the bottle and taking a big gulp from it.
"Ah love, don’t hang the jib. I only want to check to see where you need bandages and disinfection." He smiled at me, a twinkle in his eyes as he kneeled before me, in between my legs. If only the jolt of heat would stop dancing in my lower belly.
"Aye, I understand you're scared Bam. But I need to be sure. Unless you're absolutely certain your face and legs are the only damaged places on you. Me ship might be a beauty, but she caused a lot of men to die from diseases and infection that could have been taken care of."
Yes, I was sure. I was sure and I was scared. There were no other injuries. No way I was going to bare my naked body to those curious, piercing eyes of his. His drunken green eyes full of sins.
"Y-yes captain."
"Ar ye sure?"
"Yes captain."
"Aye, very well."
I could not believe my luck as he simply agreed, shrugging without caring. Taking off his tri-corner hat he placed it gently over my mop of brown hair as he was still sitting on his knees. Making me look up as the warm, heavy leather sank over my ears.
"Now ye look more like a pirate. I think the look will suit you right. I will need it back ya know, but this will do for now." He joked, but I could hardly concentrate on his roughly spoken words.
Suddenly, I could see his thick, dark brown to black hair that shone like silk in the candle light. Falling in front of his light, enthralling eyes and in great contrast with the beautiful nature green that coloured them together with the pink redness of his soft lips. Shining with moist from the liquor that had touched them just now.
He stroked his hair back with one cloth covered hand and started to drip some of the alcohol in the bottle upon his fingers.
"This might sting a little, but it’s necessary. I don’t want to hear any whining." Was all he said to me, suddenly growing serious as his fingers touched the cuts on my hand, and then my cheeks. Rubbing in the alcohol and making it burn badly. I whimpered lightly but he ignored me as he worked along.
Not before long, his stroking fingers became soothing in a way, and the pain subsided. I was only alarmed when he grabbed a dagger from his belt, but sighed when he simply started to cut up the cloth and made them bandages for my arms and hands.
It was when he was tying up the damaged flesh that he started to speak again. Finally looking up at me and hiding those dark coloured eyelids again.
**
"Now lad, I understand you're scared. Away from your family, on a ship full of strange pirates that don't care whether you live or die…." He spoke to me, still fumbling with my bandages as he went along.
I only nodded, shivering when his hand touched the inside of my knee for a moment.
"And honestly….I don’t care about that. No one will harm you boy, because I won’t let them. But now you're here, you belong to the crew. Until your beloved father pays us the ransom, you'll do what you're told, understood?"
My fear, had it been gone in the first place, grew back full force immediately. If not increased. This man was not to mess with, and his kind eyes could make you forget his true nature for the moment being. I realized that was the part I needed to worry most about.
I nodded again, my lips trembling as he looked deeply into my eyes.
Those eyes…his eyes….were not human. Those eyes could make you feel like you were floating into nothing. Loose from the world and the ground. Gone forever.
He suddenly smiled, satisfied by my reaction, and I came back into the real world again.
"But that doesn't mean we won’t take good care of you me little Bam." His hand stroked my hair again as the other one played with the dagger, rolling it around between his fingers. I had no idea where to look or how to react, so I kept silent, with my eyes on the floor.
My eyes down to the floor.
Seeing those silk knees in between my feet on the floor. So close they were almost touching and making the sweat on my brow roll down my face.
He seemed done with my injuries, as he placed the cloth of the floor next to him, and took another gulp from the bottle.
"I guess you don’t drink, do ye Bam Bam?" He asked me, holding the bottle in front of my face as I shook it a little too fiercely.
"No worries, ye’ll learn soon enough." He twisted the dagger again, the blade pressing against his palm as he neatly folded his black, ripped cloth and laid it next to me on the bed.
"Now little Bam, I think it's only fair for me to introduce myself to you, since I made you do the same. My name is Ville Valo. I am the captain of the Black heart. I’m originally from Finland, as is the rest of the crew apart from Dani, who is from England. As long as your stay will last I will give you your orders, understood?" He asked, neatly shaking my hand with the introduction. I simply nodded again. I realized that, as long as I didn't speak, I couldn't say anything wrong.
Ville had simply smiled at me as he stood up to put away the black cloth. The bottle he kept with him as he took another sip. Walking back to where I was seated, all I could think of was his name. Ville. It was so different from anything I had heard. Mysterious and strange. But still beautiful.
Just like him.
"And you're all taken care of once again. Good as new, me lad. What do ye say?"
He didn’t even look at me while he spoke, starting to rise from his knees and lifting his hat from my head to put it back where it belonged; on his.
Still, the moment I mumbled a frightened ‘Thank you Ville." Was the moment I felt the cold blade of the dagger digging into the throbbing flesh of my throat. I realized that I needed to pick my words more carefully.
**
I felt myself swallowing hard, as I closed my eyes. Feeling I was going to die. Knowing he could slice my throat with one single movement of his hand.
I didn't see what was happening, but realized how close he was when I felt his hot breath on my cheek and his lips touching my ear.
"Tutut now Bam, you know better than this, don’t ye? When I forbid Migé to hit you, I didn't mean he was wrong to punish you." He whispered in my ear, and my beliefs for his good intentions were instantly washed away. He was dangerous. He was insane.
My life was in serious danger.
I was used to addressing people with their first name as I was indeed from such a noble family. I realized now that my status had been swallowed along with the ship that had brought me here.
"What am I Bam?"
Again he forced me to speak, and the blade against my throat was pressed so tightly it almost made it impossible to do so.
"C-captain." I managed to choke out, feeling the blade being removed from my flesh as the captain laughed in satisfaction.
"Good boy, that's right. And you will address me as your captain. Always, remember? As you call your doctor, doctor, and your mother, mother, you will address me for what I am; Your captain."
"Yes captain." I spoke up, afraid that my lack of enthusiasm would be the death of me.
"I allow you to call me Captain or Captain Valo. Captain Ville Valo if you must. But no one, no one is allowed to call me simply by my first name without my permission, understood? Only my mother had that privilege once, but she is gone. Next time you will be punished Bam, count on that."
I sighed in relief when he put his dagger back behind his belt, and smiled at me. It was amazing how his attitude towards me could change within seconds, as I realized he'd never really been angry at me. Never had the intention to kill me just now.
"Don’t worry Bam. I promised I wouldn't kill you, and I meant it. You will be free within a month, I assure you. Enough for me to find out what your story is."
My story? He would be disappointed.
"I’m leaving you for a moment, since First mate Gas is expecting me. Feel free to look around the ship but don’t touch anything, I’ll be back shortly to fetch you for dinner. Yes?"
"Yes captain."
He left me? Just like this? As if he trusted me already. Maybe he knew that there was no where I could go on this pirate ship filled with his murderous crew.
Men I feared to come across. His coat and hair dancing behind him as I heard him walking fiercely through the hallway, before the died away.
I was afraid to leave. To get lost or run into one of the crew. The captain’s cabin was strange enough, a place I felt more safe than on the deck.
He had promised not to take my life.
I found myself so tired, as I sat on the silk bed, and laid myself down.
Only for a second, I assured myself. He would not find me asleep in his bed. Able to do whatever he pleased with my sleeping form.
The last thing I recalled before falling into a deep slumber, were the words that he'd whispered so teasingly in my ear. Words that made every word he spoke, every promise he made, worth absolutely nothing.
‘Never trust a pirate.’
I was in for a whole lot of pain.
